He had tested positive for the novel coronavirus on June 14

Renowned businessman Nurul Islam Babul, the chairman of Jamuna Group, has passed away at a Dhaka hospital, succumbing to Covid-19.

The 74-year-old breathed his last at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, where he had been undergoing treatment, at around 3:40pm on Monday, said Saiful Alam, the editor of the business group’s Bangla daily Jugantor.

Babul, who tested positive for the novel coronavirus on June 14, was admitted to the hospital the same day. The deadly disease had worsened his kidney functions. A 10-member medical board had been formed to oversee his treatment.

Babul is survived by wife Salma Islam, a Jatiya Party MP from the reserved seats for women, son Md Shamim Islam, the managing director of Jamuna Group, and three daughters, Shariat Tasreen Soniya, Monika Nazneen Islam, and Sumaiya Rozalin Islam – all directors of the business group.

His namaz-e-janaza is scheduled to be held on the premises of Jamuna Future Park in Bashundhara residential area, Dhaka, after the Zohr prayers on Tuesday, before the burial at Banani graveyard.

Born in 1946 in Dohar, Dhaka, Babul founded the Jamuna Group in 1974.

In the last 46 years, he expanded the group’s concerns to garments and textiles, chemicals, leather, automobiles, fast-moving consumer goods, real estate, engineering, electronics, and media.
