Convicted war criminal and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi passed away on Monday night while undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). He was 83.
Dhaka Central Jail Jailer Mahbubul Islam confirmed the matter to UNB.

“The time of the death is yet to be confirmed, as I have just arrived at BSMMU,” he said.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expressed grief over the death of their leader.
“Allama Delawar Hossain Sayeedi, one of the leaders of the world Islamic movement, an internationally renowned scholar and author of many books, passed away at 8:40 pm today at PG Hospital in Dhaka,” the party said in a Facebook post.

Sayeedi — an inmate at the Keraniganj Central Jail-1 — was taken to Shahabuddin Medical College in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon after he complained of chest pain.
Later, the hospital authorities referred him to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for better treatment.
On February 17, 2018, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court sentenced Delawar Hossain Sayeedi to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of 1971.

Earlier, on June 29, 2010, Sayeedi was arrested on charges of hurting religious sentiments. Later, on August 2 of the same year, he was arrested in a case of crimes against humanity.
