Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhī rājiʿūn. Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him we are returning.
The veteran Islamic scholar of the past half a century, Shaykh Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, has died of a heart attack after being admitted to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU), Dhaka. He had been experiencing chest pain and was serving a life sentence that many had condemned as being politically motivated. He was 83-years-old. [1]
Shaykh Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, also referred to as Allama Sayeedi, had spent his life speaking the truth, teaching the Qur’ān, and advocating for the rights of Muslims in Bangladesh.
It is said that of the few things he desired in life was to die a martyr — it may be argued that this wish has finally been fulfilled after dying at the hands of jailers who had falsely accused him of myriad crimes against humanity.

Background on the late scholar and political leader
Born in February of 1940, the shaykh — raḥimahu Allah — received his initial Islamic education at the local village madrasa, which was run by his father.
Heavily involved in the da’wah, in later life he was the Member of Parliament for the Pirojpur-1 constituency situated in Barisal Division in the south of Bangladesh from July 1996 to October 2006.
And between 2009 and 2023, Shaykh Sayeedi was a senior leader of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; he had held the position of Vice President. Jamaat is the largest Islamic organisation in the country.
Shaykh Sayeedi was fluent in Bangla, Arabic, and Urdu. He was the author of 75 books. [2]
“Deep shock and condolence”
In a statement issued by the acting leader of Jamaat, Professor Mujibur Rahman expressed his “deep shock and condolence at the death of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Ameer, globally acclaimed preacher of the Qur’ān, and former MP Allama Delwar Hossain Sayedee”. [3]
Rahman further added,
“Allama Sayedee has served the holy Qur’ān for more than 50 years. He travelled from one part to another part of the world to spread the message of Qur’ān.
“Listening to his sermons and lectures, a huge number of non-believers have embraced Islam. He also preached Islam in all corners of the country.
“His contribution to revive Islam and Islamic spirit will be remembered always. He spent his youth and middle age of life for the benefit of Islam and last couple of years of life inside prison.” [3]
The acting head of Jamaat also made reference to the challenges faced by the late leader, and du’ā that Allah (subḥānahu wa ta’āla) accepts him as a martyr.
“This noble preacher of Islam … struggled throughout his life to establish Islam. The torture and repression of the government could not deviate him from this ideology and true path.
“He has become [the] worst victim of injustice as he has been sentenced with life term imprisonment in connection with a false and fabricated case. His death is a great loss for the global Islamic movement.
“The vacuum which has [been] created due to his demise, will not be fulfilled easily. May Allah bless us to overcome this shortcoming. Amīn. May Almighty Allah forgive His servant, bless him with bounties, and award [him] with a lofty place in Jannah. May Allah accept his death as martyrdom. Amīn.” [3]
Scores attend his funeral
It is understood that Shaykh Sayeedi passed away at approximately 20:40 (UTC+6) yesterday — 14 August 2023, corresponding to 27 Muharram 1445 — while receiving care at the BSMMU.
Earlier today, his funeral took place in Pirojpur District, with thousands of attendees gathering at the Sayeedi Foundation grounds. [4]
The late political leader and scholar was predeceased by his eldest son, Rafiq. He is survived by his three other sons, Shamim, Masood, and Nasim. [2]

“A great loss”
Shaykh Dr. Haitham al-Haddad, a senior jurist at the Islamic Council of Europe and expert in various fields within the Islamic sciences, said of the passing of Shaykh Delwar Hossain Sayeedi,
“This is a great loss for the Ummah and especially for the Muslims of Bangladesh.
“May Allah grant him mercy and elevate his maqām (station) in the Akhirah. He spoke the truth and taught the Qur’ān and guidance to the Muslims.
“He patiently bore the trials of prison and persecution. He died in prison like many of our Salaf, whilst remaining steadfast upon his path.”
