Fifteen people were injured in the clash between leaders-activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and law enforcers during a protest procession of the party in the capital city’s Jatrabari area on Friday.
“Police also lobbed teargas and detained 40 people including leaders and activists of Jamaat from the procession, Ashraful Alam Imon,” the director of Jamaat’s Dhaka city south publicity and media wing, told TBS.
Madhusudan Das, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Demra Zone), confirmed that 40 people from the Jamaat’s procession were detained and stated that they were now being quizzed.

Jamaat’s Dhaka Metropolitan South unit staged the protest procession on Friday, protesting the obstruction of Janaza of its former leader and war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayeedi in absentia.
From the procession, the party demanded the release of its arrested leaders and called for the next general election to be conducted under a caretaker government.
Led by Shafiqul Islam Masood, the procession began at Jatrabari kitchen market in the capital and proceeded through significant roads in the area.
Jamaat’s Dhaka Metropolitan South Amir, Nurul Islam Bulbul, and Dhaka Metropolitan South Secretary, Shafiqul Islam Masood, strongly condemned the arrest of party leaders and activists during the procession.
As per the party’s statement issued on Wednesday, they are also scheduled to hold peaceful marches in all major cities of the country on Sunday.
Sayeedi, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity during the Liberation War, died on 14 August at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. Following his demise, a large crowd gathered at the hospital’s main gate.
