Jamuna Group chairman Nurul Islam passes away
Nurul Islam, chairman of Jamuna Group, one of the biggest conglomerates in the country, died of Covid-19 at a city hospital yesterday.

A freedom fighter, Nurul Islam, popularly known as Nurul Islam Babul, passed away at Evercare Hospital (formerly known as Apollo Hospital) at 3:40pm, Mohammad Alamgir Alam, a director of Jamuna Group, told this correspondent.
He was also suffering from kidney damage, said Alam.
One of the prominent industrialists of the country, Nurul left behind his wife Salma Islam, a Jatiya Party MP, one son, three daughters and a host of relatives to mourn his death.
Nurul Islam, also the founding chairman of Daily Jugantor and Jamuna Television, had been undergoing treatment at the hospital since June 14.
A ten-member medical board was formed for his treatment at the hospital. Besides, four specialist doctors from China and two specialist doctors from Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital had given advice through teleconference to treat him.
He will be buried at the Banani graveyard today after a namaz-e-janaza at the Jamuna Future Park mosque after Johr prayer.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, top leaders of different political parties, socio and business organisations, ministers including Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, among others, expressed deep shock at the death of Jamuna Group chairman.
In separate condolence messages, they said an entrepreneur like him was much needed to build a modern Bangladesh. His departure is an irreparable loss for the country.
The Newspapers Owners’ Association of Bangladesh, of which Nurul Islam was a founding member, also expressed sorrow.
Nurul Islam’s Son Shamim Islam is the managing director of Jamuna Group, his three daughters — Rosalin Islam, Monica Islam and Sonia Islam are directors of Jamuna Group.
Nurul Islam took the initiative to build an international standard hospital in the capital to treat Covid-19. He had already finished the initial discussion in this regard.
Nurul Islam established Jamuna in the arena of private industrial sector in 1974.
Its journey began with the Jamuna Electric Manufacturing Co. Ltd, which pioneered the manufacturing electrical accessories and fittings in Bangladesh since 1975. There after JGI flourished as a giant conglomerate.
Jamuna developed and expanded its enterprises to diversify its product range.
In the course of 34 years of operation, Jamuna Group expanded into a dynasty of 24 large scale enterprises.
“Jamuna Group has been a big contribution towards the national exchequer in the form of taxes and by generating employment opportunities for a huge number of unemployed work forces. More than one lakh people work under different ventures of Jamuna Group,” Mohammad Alamgir Alam told this correspondent.
From textile to real estate, Jamuna Group has diverse business interests in 38 sectors.
It has ventured into electrical, engineering, chemical, leather, garments and textiles — including spinning, knitting and dyeing, and cosmetics, toiletries, beverages, real estate, housing, print and electronic media sectors.
Jamuna Group is also involved real estate development and one of the biggest projects it had undertaken was “The Future Park.”
