Journo Habib’s death: Legal action through investigation demanded

Politicians, colleagues, family members and friends of journalist Habibur Rahman on Saturday urged the government for proper investigation into the death of Habib.

The death of Habib must be properly investigated and his family and friends had rights to know what actually happened on the spot on the fatal night, they said

Speakers came up with the demand again at a commemorative programme organized by Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) at its auditorium in the capital.

Daily Somoyer Alo senior reporter and DRU’s former organizing secretary Habibur Rahman, 35, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on the night of January 19 reportedly following a road accident at Hatirjheel in the capital.

The friends and colleague, however, expressed their doubts whether it was actually a road accident or planned murder.

Addressing at the commemoration programme, Awami League joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said legal action will be taken through ensuring quick and proper investigation over the death of Habib.

He said “The investigation into Habib’s death should be expedited. I will talk to the Home Minister and the Commissioner of Police in this regard. Legal action will be taken soon after getting the autopsy report.”

Even if we want to, we can’t bring Habib back now. So now everyone has to stand by Habib’s family members, said the AL leader

Hanif also said “You will not be disappointed; Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is a journalist-friendly leader. We will try to arrange jobs for Habib’s wife and brother. At the same time, I want to assure you that Habib’s family will get quick financial help.”

DRU president Nazrul Islam Mithu said we are demanding an investigation into Habib’s death but no one has been contacted with us so far over the investigation. We want to know how Habib’s death happened through a proper probe.”

He urged government for providing job to Habib’s wife and his younger brother to help the family. He also vowed to extend their support to the family members of the late journalist.

Habib’s father demanded a fair investigation over the death of his beloved son. Habib’s wife Hashi Akter Rimi said that journalism was her husband’s passion and she still could not believe that her husband died.

DRU Secretary general Nurul Islam Hasib conduced the event while Awami League Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua, Prime Minister’s Deputy press secretary KM Shakhwat Moon, Dhaka University Prof Abul Mansur, National Press Club President Farida Yasmin, DRU former President Shahjahan Sarder, Shahed Chowdhury, Mursalin Nomani and former general secretaries Sajjad Alam Khan Topu, Raju Ahmed, Syed Sakkur Ali Shuvo, Moshiur Rahman Khan, BFUJ secretary general Dip Azad, and  senior journalists Uttam Chakraborty and Syed Shahnewaz were also spoke among others at the programme.
