Playback singer Andrew Kishore breathed his last on July 6 after a ten-month battle with cancer. His funeral will be held on July 15 to give his only daughter, who currently resides in Australia, a chance to bid Kishore farewell.
His son will return to Bangladesh on July 8. Due to the flight restrictions, they cannot come any sooner, informed Kishore’s brother-in-law Dr Patrick Bipul Biswas.
For the next nine days, Kishore’s body would be kept at the Rajshahi Medical College (RAMEK) morgue.
Dr Biswas said: “Kishore will be buried next to his mother. That was his wish. Back in 2017, when we went together to the Rajshahi graveyard to pay our respects to deceased family members, he made me promise that his body would be buried right here in Rajshahi, alongside his mother, no matter where he breathed his last.”
A wave of sorrow has washed over Kishore’s hometown Rajshahi. Grieving fans and well-wishers crowded near his house as soon as the unfortunate news of his death broke last night.
When his body was taken to the morgue, teary fans followed the hearse to its destination. People from all over the world, whose hearts the singer touched with his music, took to social media platforms to pay their final respects.
Rjshahi Shilpakala Academy’s former cultural officer Abdur Rashid observed Kishore’s early life from a close distance. He said: “An artiste like Kishore is born once in a few centuries. We will never recover from this loss.”
He added, “When Kishore was young, he would never miss his practice sessions. His mother always encouraged his pursuits and gave him confidence. She was the reason behind his success.
“When Nayak Razzak heard him sing in one of our local plays, he asked me to take Kishore to Dhaka so that he could pursue a career as a playback singer. Soon after, Kisore left Rajshahi.”
Fazle Hossain Badsha, Member of Parliament, Rajshahi-2, reminisced to our Rajshahi correspondent: “Kishore lived near my house. Every day I would go about my chores while he toiled away at his practice sessions. Can you imagine that he would never come back to his hometown, that I would never again be privy to one of those beautiful practice sessions?’
Andrew Kishore had been fighting cancer since September, 2019. He had an adrenal gland tumour which turned malignant.
His name will be forever etched in our memory for songs like Jiboner Golpo Ache Baki Olpo, Haire Manush Rongin Fanush, Dak Diachen Doyal Amare, Amar Shara Deho Kheyo Go Mati, Shobai To Bhalobasha Chae, and more.
Andrew Kishore received the National Film Award eight times for playback singing in films.
