Applied Physicist Project Scientist – 94819

Organization:  SN-Scientific Networking

Berkeley Lab’s QUANT-NET project has an open position for an Applied Physicist Project Scientist to help build two small-scale ion-trap computers with cavities to help with the project’s quantum teleportation experiments between Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and University of California, Berkeley.

In this exciting role, you will be part of a multi-organization team, and will be researching, simulating, and developing the latest ion-trap technologies closely with professors and other graduate students at UC Berkeley.

QUANT-NET is a five-year DOE funded project that brings together world-leading expertise in quantum technologies, optics, materials, networks, testbed operations, and other assets from Berkeley Lab, UC Berkeley, and Caltech in order to build a proof-of-concept quantum network based on entanglement. This software-controlled, application-focused quantum computing network will link Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley. The three-node distributed testbed will feature an entanglement swapping substrate over optical fiber and will be managed by a quantum network protocol stack. The collaboration will also demonstrate entanglement between small-scale quantum computers at the two testbed locations.

What You Will Do:

  • Play a leading role in developing the scientific and hardware approach of the ion trap nodes. Guide the implementation, especially, of the integration of a high-finesse cavity into the ion trap.
  • Assist in building up the ion trap laboratory at LBNL, as well as oversee the building of laser sources and optical paths, including support for laser synchronization efforts across Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley. Lead the process of bringing the ion trap nodes at both locations into operations.
  • Lead a team of one postdoc and 2-3 graduate students to set up an ion trap quantum node. Oversee and implement experiments towards entangling ions between UCB and LBNL.
  • Coordinate with the teams building and managing  the fiber infrastructure, quantum frequency conversion, software stack as well as other node technologies.
  • Contribute significantly to implement a quantum repeater protocol and a remote controlled-NOT gate.
  • Coordinate with color center node to implement hybrid entanglement.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Physics or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent combination of skills and experience.
  • 3+ years of post Ph.D experience in experimental atomic physics or related fields.
  • 3+ years of experience in trapping and coherent manipulation of atoms/ions and quantum information (including PhD/Postdoc).
  • Demonstrated record of scientific excellence through publications and conference presentations.
  • Substantial experience in cavity QED, in particular, coupling atoms with cavity fields.
  • Experience in laser stabilization.
  • Demonstrated mentoring experience of graduate students.
  • Demonstrated expertise at successfully working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team of scientists and engineers.
  • Ability to interact with a variety of technical and scientific personnel including Research Associates, Scientists and Software Engineers with varied academic backgrounds.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to present and disseminate scientific software developments at group meetings and conferences.

For full consideration, please apply by February 15, 2022.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 5 years, term appointment.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
