Mangaluru, Jan 14: Minister for fisheries, sports and inland waterways, S Angara, issued instructions to the officials of the health department to keep taluk hospitals and community health centres in readiness to handle any situation arising out of increasing infections of coronavirus and its variants.

He was speaking after presiding over a meeting organized in the auditorium of the office of the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district on the issue of covid19 infection and other issues. He pointed out that if the taluk and community hospitals are not ready to handle the increased inflow of patients, there will be more pressure on the district Wenlock Hospital as redirected patients will seek admission there. He said that if the doctors in the taluks and health workers keep beds, ventilators, oxygen, liquid oxygen and other things needed for Covid treatment in readiness, it will help to handle the situation if any arising out of increased coronavirus infections and its variants in an organized manner.

Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner Dr Rajendra K V, speaking on the occasion, said that out of 16 oxygen units, 15 are functioning. He said that their testing experiments have been successful and private hospitals are also ready to treat Covid patients. He said that the district should record good achievement in administering booster vaccination doses and called upon the tahsildars and taluk health officers to ensure that high number of registrations take place at the taluk level, list of eligible people is prepared, and steps are taken to administer the vaccines on the spot.

Minister for social welfare and backward classes welfare, Kota Srinivas Poojary, asked the officials to identify scheduled caste and tribe beneficiaries for DC Manna land. He also asked the revenue officials to see that land as needed is sanctioned to the selected beneficiaries.

MLAU T Khader came up with certain suggestions. Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police, Rishikesh Bhagwan Sonawane, city corporation commissioner Akshy Sridhar, zilla panchayat secretary Anand Kumar, district health and family welfare officer Dr Kishore Kumar and others were present.

The deputy commissioner said that the situation in the district is not as bad as to warrant closure of schools as of now. He informed that if Covid cases rise, only those schools where high infections are noticed, will be closed down temporarily. He said that some cases where only minor symptoms were noticed, have been reported. He asked the block education officers and tahsildars to report in case Covid infection is noticed in schools located within their jurisdictions.
