Covid-19: Jamuna Group Chairman Nurul Islam Babul passes away at 74

Renowned businessman Nurul Islam Babul, the chairman of Jamuna Group, has passed away at a Dhaka hospital, succumbing to Covid-19.
The 74-year-old breathed his last at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, where he had been undergoing treatment, at around 3:40pm on Monday, said Saiful Alam, the editor of the business group’s Bangla daily Jugantor.
Babul, who tested positive for the novel coronavirus on June 14, was admitted to the hospital the same day. The deadly disease had worsened his kidney functions. A 10-member medical board had been formed to oversee his treatment.
Babul is survived by wife Salma Islam, a Jatiya Party MP from the reserved seats for women, son Md Shamim Islam, the managing director of Jamuna Group, and three daughters, Shariat Tasreen Soniya, Monika Nazneen Islam, and Sumaiya Rozalin Islam – all directors of the business group.
His namaz-e-janaza is scheduled to be held on the premises of Jamuna Future Park in Bashundhara residential area, Dhaka, after the Zohr prayers on Tuesday, before the burial at Banani graveyard.
Born in 1946 in Dohar, Dhaka, Babul founded the Jamuna Group in 1974.
In the last 46 years, he expanded the group’s concerns to garments and textiles, chemicals, leather, automobiles, fast-moving consumer goods, real estate, engineering, electronics, and media.

At present, the Jamuna Group has 38 sister concerns in different sectors, employing more than 50,000 people.
The group owns Bangla national Jugantor and news channel Jamuna TV.
Jamuna Future Park, one of the biggest shopping malls in South Asia, and the Mariott Hotel are also concerns of the business conglomerate.
Condolences pour in
A host of prominent people in Bangladesh have condoled the Jamuna Group chairman’s death.
Among political figures, Speaker of the House Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Planning Minister MA Mannan, Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader condoled Babul’s family on Monday.
Both the mayors of Dhaka city, Atiqul Islam and Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, also expressed shock and sorrow at his death.
Sheikh Fazle Fahim, president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), expressed grief over the death of Nurul Islam Babul, and offered deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
The Editors Guild, Bangladesh also condoled Babul’s death.
