PUNE: The engineering units of the Army have carried out resurfacing work on the Parade Ground Road and outside the Race Course, Turf Club, and in the lane starting from the St Andrew’s Hindustani Church and leading to Exhibition Road over the last few days.
TOI had highlighted the poor condition of these roads in a report on January 12.
The work has been done collectively by the Garrison Engineer (North) and the Dakshin Maharashtra and Goa Sub Area (DMGSA), the Local Military Authority (LMA) of Pune.
“The Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran had done underground pipeline work on these roads a few months ago. It could not resurface the road despite giving several reminders. It had become a risky stretch. Commuters, including Army personnel, had made several complaints about it in the past. We completed its tendering process on priority and completed the work. Now, it will be repaired and monitored regularly,” a senior army officer, who did not wish to be named, said.
Granting permission to any private or government agency to carry out laying of cables or pipeline work will be given after finalizing the terms and conditions. If it fails to adhere to the terms and conditions, legal action will be initiated against the particular agency, another Army officer said.
Other road repairs and patchwork in Wanowrie and Ghorpadi areas have also been planned. They will get over in the coming weeks, the sources said.
The roads, which fall within the limits of the Pune Cantonment Board, will be repaired soon, said an official from the Pune Cantonment Board.
“We have made a budgetary allocation worth Rs 3 crore for the road repairs in the civil areas of the cantonment. We are on the verge of completing the tendering process. The actual work is expected to commence in the first week of February,” a senior official from the cantonment said.
Meanwhile, citizens and activists of the PCB pointed out that the authorities concerned need to carry out patchwork near Ganga Satellite society area in Wanowrie.
“Some of the lanes and bylanes in the core cantonment areas are filled with potholes. Non-fatal accidents take place mainly due to potholes. The cantonment board should repair these roads on priority,” Mominpura resident Satish Bhand said.
