Dali Ancient Town is about a 30 minute drive from Dali Train Station. Unfortunately it has been turned into a tourist shopping town, with a couple of kilometres of shops all selling exactly the same stuff (with the exception of one leather shop). The buildings are in the process of being restored and the streets are all dug up with new plumbing going in. Building materials, sand & cement everywhere. There are very deep drains covered by bits of tin and timber. Half a day would have sufficed in that town to wander around the shops and admire the cloud covered mountains. Two of the restaurants we ate at were very overpriced with the food being very substandard. The street food mostly looked good but we didn’t partake as I had been unwell. I am sad to say there are a couple of McDonalds and KFC. There are all sorts of heavily laden trucks carrying rocks or gravel, sand, etc, and cranes, cars, bikes, horses & carts, barrowmen, etc. etc. and hundreds of tourists trying to walk the main thoroughfares. It is extremely noisy and unpleasant. We do not recommend Dali Ancient Town at all, however if you must go there we recommend the Three Pagodas and maybe a drive around the lake (hire a car & driver) to visit one or two of the more rural villages, although these are also quite touristic.
